Plumbing in Pascoe Vale
A late suburb over an old creek
The land between the station and Coburg North was not filled by housing until the 1950s, because unmade roads and no sewerage held builders back.
Westbreen Creek became a military dumping ground in World War Two and afterwards a Council tip, and in 1979 the MMBW agreed to underground the creek via a barrel drain beneath what is now a linear park. Filled ground and an old creek line are worth knowing about before a drain is dug nearby.
Yarra Valley Water owns the sewers here, and its works assessed 284 maintenance holes in the Pascoe Vale sewer catchment, relining many of them. Melbourne Water is running Stage 2 of the Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek project along the suburb's edge.

Pascoe Vale questions
Permits, overlays and reports
Does a new drain connection need a permit?
Merri-bek requires a Drainage Connection permit whenever building works connect to or interfere with a council drain.
Does heritage affect pipework at Westbreen Hall?
Only on the old part. Under HO418 the gabled weatherboard hall and porch are significant, while later additions are not, so external pipework on the additions is a plain plumbing job.
Does the old primary school's listing affect pipework?
On its street face. The school is listed for the high integrity of the building when viewed from Gaffney Street, so visible pipework and downpipes on that side are a heritage question; its other buildings are not significant.
