Blocked, burst or leaking in Armadale?
Blocked drains, burst pipes and leaks in Armadale, from the streets around the station to the rows of identical cottages, passed to a licensed plumber day and night.
Plumbing in Armadale
A railway station, its subdivisions and the flats that followed
When the railway between South Yarra and Oakleigh was joined up, a station opened at Armadale, with a commercial centre around it and residential subdivisions nearby. Houses on those first subdivisions are likely to keep original earthenware sewer drains and old galvanised water services, so roots at the clay joints are expected and a camera goes in before a repair is priced.
At the last Census more than half of the occupied private dwellings in Armadale were flats or apartments, almost five times the state's share. In a block of flats the blockage is often in a common sewer branch owned by the owners corporation, so the body corporate manager is found before access or cost is agreed.

Armadale questions
Rebuilt streets, kerb outlets and identical cottages
Why does a downpipe still back up after council rebuilt the street?
Because the council side is new. Stonnington reconstructed one Armadale street, starting with a new stormwater drainage system and then new kerb, channel and crossings, so a line that still backs up there points to a fault on the private side. Reconnecting at the kerb needs council consent.
Will an old kerb outlet line up with a new kerb?
Not always. On another street council laid new underground drainage with a new concrete kerb and bluestone channel and changed the road level, so an old property outlet may now sit wrong. The connection point is checked and consent sought before the footpath is opened.
How is gear brought into the heritage cottages with no driveways?
Through the front. The precinct is an early subdivision of thirty-two identical cottages, valued in part for having no on-site parking, so the job relies on street parking and carrying equipment in, and any new visible pipework is checked against the heritage overlay.
