Emerald
Blocked, burst or leaking in Emerald?
Blocked drains, burst pipes and leaks in Emerald, from the old Nobelius nursery land to Emerald Lake Park, passed to a licensed plumber day and night.
Plumbing in Emerald
Nursery lots and lakeside pines
After Carl Nobelius died, the nursery and orchards were subdivided and sold, and the houses on that land now span many decades. An older lot may still have earthenware or galvanised lines, and exotic trees left from the nursery days often stand close to the drains.
Emerald Lake Park keeps conifers, mature oaks and perimeter rows of Monterey pines around its central lake. Roots from trees that size travel well past the canopy, so on properties near the park edge a camera looks at the drain joints before anything is cut or dug.

Emerald questions
Registered sheds, the old bakery and pumped sewers
Does work at the old packing shed need a permit?
Yes. The Nobelius Nursery packing shed and railway siding are on the Victorian Heritage Register as part of the Nobelius Heritage Park. Any plumbing, drain or service trench work within the registered place needs a Heritage Victoria permit or exemption first, which adds lead time.
Can the flue or downpipes on the old bakery be replaced?
They can, after a check with council. The old Emerald Bakery is in the heritage overlay, its surviving Scotch oven part of its significance, so changing visible roof plumbing, flues or external pipework may need a council heritage permit before the job starts.
Is a backed up sewer always the property's problem?
No. Yarra Valley Water lists two sewage pumping stations in Emerald, which lift wastewater from low ground to a higher level. A sewer surcharging in a low street may be a pump station matter, so the corporation is asked before the house drain is opened.
