Hot water replacement in Melbourne
Replacing a hot water system is the plumbing job Melbourne asks the price of most. The choice turns on the household's size, the space, and the gas rule that changes on 1 March 2027.
Hot water replacement
Choosing the new system
Electric storage
The simplest swap where an electric tank is there now. Running costs depend on the tariff.
Heat pump
Electric, but far cheaper to run than a plain electric tank, and the one most rebates are for.
Gas
Gas storage or continuous flow, in an existing home only until 1 March 2027 unless an exemption applies.
Size
Tank size follows the number of people in the house, so the plumber asks before recommending one.

How it works
From the first message to a plumber on site
One message or call, and the job goes to the plumbing company that does it.
Tell us what has gone wrong
What is blocked, burst or leaking, where it is, and whether water or sewage is still running.
The job goes to Plumb & Co
Your details go straight to Plumb & Co, a Melbourne plumbing company, and they arrange a plumber to come out.
The cause is found first
Whose pipe it is, yours or the water corporation's, is worked out before anything else, with a camera where the cause is hidden.
A price before the work
Nothing is started until you have the price for the job and have said yes to it.
Replacement questions
Rules, rebates and timing
What changes on 1 March 2027?
From then, the Victorian Government says a gas water heater in an existing home that needs replacing cannot be replaced with another mains gas unit and must go electric, with a range of exemptions where that is impractical or costly.
Will a rebate lower the price?
For a heat pump it may. Solar Victoria and Victorian Energy Upgrades each have their own eligibility, so no single after-rebate price is quoted here.
