Brooklyn
Blocked, burst or leaking in Brooklyn?
Blocked drains, burst pipes and leaks in Brooklyn, from Kororoit Creek to the trunk sewer reserve, passed to a licensed plumber day and night.
Plumbing in Brooklyn
Postwar streets over fill and a trunk sewer
By the early postwar years a residential subdivision was laid out in a wedge east of Kororoit Creek. Houses of that time may still have earthenware sewers and galvanised water pipe, so roots at clay joints and corroded supply are both likely, and a camera comes first.
Beside the creek, the Brooklyn Lodge site was a tip before it became the Urban Forest reserve, and the tip now sits in an old quarry to the north. Filled ground settles unevenly, so drains laid near it can sag or crack.
The Board of Works trunk sewer to Werribee runs deep under Brooklyn, covered by a linear public reserve through the houses. That reserve and the sewer belong to the water authority, so no one digs near it without the authority's consent, and a fault in it is never the owner's to fix.
Jobs in Brooklyn
Old clay, settling fill and authority assets
Blocked drains
Roots in early postwar clay and sags in drains near old fill.
Pipe relining
Lining a cracked line where the ground has settled but the fall still works.
CCTV drain inspection
Locating pipes clear of water authority sewer assets before any trench.
What it costs: hot water replacement cost, gutter replacement cost, toilet installation cost
Brooklyn questions
Pumping mains, shared lots and settling ground
Why check the property plan before digging?
The old Brooklyn Pumping Station replaced the Spotswood steam pumps with a new gravity sewer and rising main. Those water authority assets are found on the plans before a trench opens anywhere near them.
Who shares a sewer branch in a townhouse group?
Semi-detached houses, rows and townhouses made up 41.9 percent of Brooklyn's occupied private dwellings at the last Census, three times the state share. With that many attached homes, whether a blockage sits on common property is settled first.
Can a sagging drain on fill be relined?
Sometimes. A lining seals cracks and joints but cannot lift a dip, so where the ground has dropped a section may need relaying. The footage decides.
