Blocked, burst or leaking in Bittern?

Blocked drains, burst pipes and leaks in Bittern, from the village to the bushland of Lorna’s Triangle, passed to a licensed plumber day and night.

Subdivisions, consolidation and remnant bush

When industry was announced for Hastings and Crib Point, land south of the Bittern village was subdivided for residential use. About twenty years later many of those subdivisions were consolidated, so a sewer branch or drain may follow a lot layout that no longer exists, and finding it by plan or camera comes first.

Some old subdivisions became public reserves instead, the best example being Lorna’s Triangle, which preserves remnant bushland. On properties backing onto it, native roots near the drains are the first suspect for a blockage that keeps coming back.

Bittern questions

Proposed overlays on the hall and old post office

Do heritage rules apply to the hall's downpipes?

Not yet. A Shire amendment proposes a heritage overlay for the Bittern Community Hall and the former Bittern Post Office, with no interim controls. If it is adopted, replacing visible downpipes, roof drainage or external pipework on either building would likely need a planning permit.

Can native roots be kept out of a drain?

Largely. Cutting the roots without sealing the joint only buys time, so a lining or a new length of PVC is what stops them returning.
